::: Malayatoor Church

Malayatoor Church - Kerala
Located 52 kms from Kochi, the Malayatoor church is situated atop the 609 m high Malayatoor Hill. The church is dedicated to St. Thomas, who is believed to have prayed at this shrine. This famous church is situated at Kurisumudi, a verdant hill in the Western Ghats girdled partially by the river Periyar. The church has a life-size statue of St.Thomas. It is believed that the St.Thomas, who came to India in 52 A.D, visited Malayatoor twice. Situated near the church is a rock that is believed to have his footprints on it.
It was declared as an international pilgrim centre by the Vatican. The architecture of the church is very interesting and uses a combination of unique styles that are a delight to the eyes. It is a combination of Greco-Roman architecture with a traditional Greek styled altar. The front of the church has been built in the typical Roman Catholic architecture. The church has been decorated with beautiful carvings, designs and paintings that depict the life of Jesus Christ. The church also has an ancient pond that was sued for baptism purposes and a traditional pulpit that is considered to be of much historical significance. The biggest and most auspicious occasion here is the feast of St. Thomas, which is observed on the first Sunday after Easter, when thousands throng the shrine for his blessings.
