It is a comprehensive theatre form that has existed since before the tenth century AD and is India's oldest theatre to have been continuously performed.
Traditionally, Koodiyattam has been presented by Chakyars, though it is not to be confused with ChakyarKoothu, another classical artform of Kerala.
The name Koodiyattam as its name suggests is a combined performance of Chakyar and Nangyar. Traditionally Mizhavu , a special percussion instrument was the only instrument used in Koodiyattam performances. Off late Edakka , another traditional drum has also been used as accompaniment. Chakyar is the main actor who performs the ritualistic Koothu and Koodiyattam inside the temple or in the Koothambalam .
While following the performative principles of the larger Indian aesthetic tradition, Koodiyattam has its own distinctive characteristics that are firmly rooted in the culture of Kerala.
